I tried to take a bite out of a porcupine. And now look at me. Look how terrified I am.

I can't close my mouth. I hurt so bad. I can't swallow or drink and I keep gaging and throwing up. I kept thrashing and yelping and turning in crazy circles like a mad dog. HELP HELP!

My mom grabbed me by the collar and we went home. I would not stay still. I was so confused and foaming and pawing and freaking out. My Dad was on a conference in Halifax so my mom called the vet. But it was late at night. The vet said it was not life and death so if we could wait until the morning we could get me in first thing, in the mean time we should try and remove as many as we could by ourselves.

But they were all stuck in my teeth and gums. Christa came down to hold me still and my mom took the pliers and pulled. The quills are barbed so they rip and tear on the way out. I went nuts and Christa took off screaming back to the attic and said she couldn't stand to do it. It was a long night and no one slept. My mom kept saying 5 more hours Guinness, 4 more, 3 more...it was terrible terrible terrible.

And now I am getting sleepy--and rest comes very easy....

  1. Holy crap! Late at night? Not life or death? What a lazy vet. That must have been the longest night of everybody's life for sure. It looks so painful. You poor guy. Now you are in jail? Without your girlfriend to comfort you?

    Get better fast.

  2. OUCH!! What a long night that must have been. We hope everyone is rested and healing.

    Lilly, Piper, Carrleigh and Java

  3. Oh No!!!!! I think I would have gotten another vet. Imagine if HE/SHE had to wait if that happened to them?!!

Glad your on the mend and that your humans cared for you.

  4. Oh No Guinness, I'm so terribly sorry. I agree with the other's, the vet should have gotten you in so that the barbs could be pulled out when you had pain medicine in you.

I honestly hurts my mom person to see you like that, so we'll pray for your speedy recovery.

    Oskar & his mom person

  5. Oh OWWWWW. It hurts me to look at you. I think that vet has no compassion and is in the wrong line of business. Are there any others nearby so you can switch or are you stuck with that one?

    Grrrrs from Gizzy

  6. Rohan Here,
Dude!!!!! :( I feel your pain.
Listen to your mom and take it easy.

  7. we have a fantastic vet, i wouldn't trade him for the world. he left the decision up to me. it was my choice to wait til the morning--the price for an emergency call out was astronomical. i could have changed my mind at 3 in the morning and my vet would have come in. but waiting til the morning allowed for a full staff to be there and no over night stay. i stayed up with guinness and kept him calm. then he would sleep, wake up, sleep, wake up... and then the morning came and he was in by 7:30.... porquepine quills are VERY common here. His were nothing. do a google search for INCA the BULL TERRIER and PORCUPINE and be prepared to FREAK OUT!!!

  8. Wooos Guinness! That was life or death! Poor baby! I am horrified you got those things stuck in woo little face. I do not think I would be so patient, I would be screaming for help.... bummer man.....I think I will stay away from whatever porcupines are, I am glad we do not have them near me...
    .-Kira The BeaWootiful

  9. oh gosh! Im sure glad we don't have those mean prickly things here in Sandy Eggo...unless you count sumthin called cactus. Those can be prickly too.

Poor boy, you sure look miserable. I can't believe the vet told you to wait until morning, the least he could have done was prescribe some pain killers to get you thru the night if he was too lazy to see you! Grrrr..that makes mom really mad.

    hope you feel better soon
    wags, wiggles & healing slobbers

  10. he couldn't swallow any pain killers. lol. Boy you guys are pretty unsympathetic for the vets--hahaa. again, it was my choice to wait it out til the morning, quills are very common here

  11. OMG!! Sweetie - we are so sorry this happened! We are sending many healing rayz!
Thank dawg - we don't have porcupines here, but Mamma was born & raised in NB - so she knows all about them!!
Take care, dear Wolfie - keep us posted on your recovery!
You have a pawsome Mom to be able to get them all pulled out!!

    ((Hugs)) your friends
    Oskar, Schatzi & Xena

  12. Didn't your Mom read the letters to you about STAY AWAY FROM PORKIES? I bet you will now, that is for certain.

My heart goes out to you, and I hope your snooter heals up fast.

  13. Oh Guiness, your pricks look so painful. We're glad mom stayed up with you and kept you calm. Hope they are all out now and you can eat and sleep.

    Martha & bailey xxxxx

  17. ps our mum wants to send some hugs to your mom too!!!!!

  18. Dear sweet puppy I was reading your question to Ali and decided to check your blog. Oh my goodness me I am so sorry what a horrible accident. I CANNOT believe your vet did not consider that an emergency. How would your vet like to have a mouthful of porcipine quils? I'm aghast with horror.
Bless your mommy's heart for trying her best to get them out. I cannot imagine the pain and discomfort. We hope and pray you are feeling better.Madi and Mom

  19. Oh you poor baby! IT really hurts to look at those pictures. I can't even imagine how bad it hurts you! And your Mom! Has this ever happened to you before? Oh, of course not or you would have learned to give those bad animals a wide berth!

Kisses and get well soon wishes,
    Emma Rose

  20. Oh NO! Poor poor baby! That must have been the longest night! We're with Mango, lazy a** vet!

We hope you recover fast, guess you won't be doing this again huh. Your poor mommy, she must have been besides herself.

All the best to both of you....

    Mom to

  21. Guinness, that looked horrendous! The pain and discomfort you must have been in! We're wishing you a speedy recover and hope you're getting some rest now.

    take care of yourself
    Clive and family

  22. Guinness, you're a true Irish Porcupine Hound! Back in the old days, only the Nobility could own such creatures. That was an awesome demonstration of innate quill-seeking instincts--plainly the result of centuries of selective breeding! In our eyes, you're a champ!

    Hope everything comes out okay,

    Buster, Sephie & Bailey

  23. Guinness!
I can see you were waiting there for enough time!
I hope you are doing well now!
    It looks really painful!
    Take care
    Kisses and hugs

  24. OMG! Guinness! We found you through Mango's blog, and I wasn't expecting this! It looks so painful! Like, I think I may have nightmares! You poor doggy! I hope you're healing well... and I hope you never are tempted to bite a porcupine again! I never knew their quills are barbed! Oh... painful!

  25. OMG! What kind of vet let's you suffer all night with porcupine quills in your mouth??? You poor thing, and your momma too for having to watch you suffer.

We'd bite that vet in the shin, well we'd gum 'em. ...

  26. You poor guy. That looks awful. I never met one of those animals. You were very brave to take a bite out of him. But porcupines don't look too tasty. Hope you are all better soon.

  27. Ow ow ow ow ow ow ow ow ow ow ow poor thing!

  28. I am with Mango...I cant believe your vet didnt think that was an emergency....I wonder if it was his dog would he let it sit there all night suffering...poor guy...i hope you are all better...

  29. We read about you at Mango's blog! OMG, how horrible for you! We can only imagine how much those quills hurt! WE are sending you lots of AireZen and hoping you're in less pain soon!

    Love ya lots
    Maggie and Mitch

  30. Ouch. We have lots of creatures to avoid here, but have never run into a porcupine. Ouch.

  31. Poor poor baby. I'm with Mango, that was just a lazy vet.

Now go to sleep and dream peaceful not having a porcupine in yer mouth dreams.

    Bobo and Meja

  32. I am glad that you and your vet discussed what to do and that everything worked out OK. We suburban doggies don't know anything about wild animal stuff and what should be done and it just looked so awful, but you are OK now, right?

Please don't do that again, OK?

  33. everything is fine Mango and there will be a full update on Guinness tomorrow! i will try not to do that again but i am kinda stupid. love guinness

  34. oh my god! that looks horrible! we really hope you're doing better!

  35. Poor Guinness and poor Mom - what a horrible experience. We just heard about this at Mango's place. That must have been so painful for you and we don't know how your Mom was able to cope. We hope you are much more comfortable now and that you heal quickly.

    Hugs, the OP Pack

  38. oooooh... I was gasping and saying "Oh, no!" I'm so sorry you had to go through that pain. I am glad that the quills are out now. Whew! We know you won't go near one of those critters again!

    Benny & Lily

  40. O Guinness!!! You poor thing! What a horrible thing that porcupine did to you! and you were only trying to eat him :-(

  42. OMD!!! I hope you are okay! That looks awfully painful. OUCH!

  43. Hey Guinness,

Mango sent me here to wish you well. Now that I have read what happened I think you should post the name and address of your vet so I can get some doggies together to rip him/her a few new ones.

That is the most painful lookin thing I've ever seen.

    Hoover BPD (Battery Powered Dog)

  44. Yowza...you poor thing! That looks incredibly uncomfortable. I hope you are feeling much better very soon. This is my first visit here and I thought maybe you still had your vampire Halloween costume on! Get some rest, and I'll send you a long distance puppy kiss!
    Sadie Lou

  45. Oh poor sweet Guinness....I am SO sorry this happened to you. Are you better now? I just can't imagine the pain or how your Mom felt knowing you were in so much pain...terrible! I did see a dead porcupine on the road two days ago if that makes you feel better. ;) Thinking of you!

  46. Holy Dog Crap! That looks NASTY! i woulda demanded that vet come over STAT! or gone to the ER, if there was one. no way would i be able to sleep with that kinda doggie!
I'm so sorry this happened. it' looks NASTY.
Now the question is: will this make Guinness averse to porcupines or want to "get even" with porcupines? oooo... i sure hope it's the first!
    hope you get better soon!
    Wild Dingo

  47. Hi Guiness,
We came from Mango's blog to send some hugs. You poor poor boy and that horrible horrible porcupine!! You don't have to tell us how much that hurts cos we can FEEL your pain buddy. Next time stay away from those nasty pricks.. :P

Hope you feel better soon.. (((Hugs))

  48. Oh Guinness!

Can we have an ouchie update?

    Puppy kisses (careful, soft ones)

  49. I am heartbroken for you - I can't imagine how much that hurts, or how agonizing the walk home must of been for your Momma so worried about you. We hope so much you are on the mend, you poor sweet thing!

  50. I know about those awful porkies. Pricks indeed.
    hope you are better soon.

  51. Oh poor Guinness! Mango told us about your horrible incident and I am so sorry that the vet was not willing to see you right away. It must have been so hard for you and your mom. I hope you are feeling much better now!

    wally t.

  52. Ouch is an understatement you poor thing. Our Irish Setter got porcupined when I was a child and it was awful. We were up north, no vets around and my dad and I had to remove them. To this day I shudder and can feel the pain from here. Not fair, the Leonberger that was quilled was able to see an emergency vet same night. Hmmmm where's a good doctor when you need one.
