OUCH! YOU PRICK!

I tried to take a bite out of a porcupine. And now look at me. Look how terrified I am.

I can't close my mouth. I hurt so bad. I can't swallow or drink and I keep gaging and throwing up. I kept thrashing and yelping and turning in crazy circles like a mad dog. HELP HELP!

My mom grabbed me by the collar and we went home. I would not stay still. I was so confused and foaming and pawing and freaking out. My Dad was on a conference in Halifax so my mom called the vet. But it was late at night. The vet said it was not life and death so if we could wait until the morning we could get me in first thing, in the mean time we should try and remove as many as we could by ourselves.

But they were all stuck in my teeth and gums. Christa came down to hold me still and my mom took the pliers and pulled. The quills are barbed so they rip and tear on the way out. I went nuts and Christa took off screaming back to the attic and said she couldn't stand to do it. It was a long night and no one slept. My mom kept saying 5 more hours Guinness, 4 more, 3 more...it was terrible terrible terrible.

And now I am getting sleepy--and rest comes very easy....

  1. Holy crap! Late at night? Not life or death? What a lazy vet. That must have been the longest night of everybody's life for sure. It looks so painful. You poor guy. Now you are in jail? Without your girlfriend to comfort you?

    Get better fast.

  3. Oh No!!!!! I think I would have gotten another vet. Imagine if HE/SHE had to wait if that happened to them?!!

Glad your on the mend and that your humans cared for you.

  4. Oh No Guinness, I'm so terribly sorry. I agree with the other's, the vet should have gotten you in so that the barbs could be pulled out when you had pain medicine in you.

I honestly hurts my mom person to see you like that, so we'll pray for your speedy recovery.

  5. Oh OWWWWW. It hurts me to look at you. I think that vet has no compassion and is in the wrong line of business. Are there any others nearby so you can switch or are you stuck with that one?

  7. we have a fantastic vet, i wouldn't trade him for the world. he left the decision up to me. it was my choice to wait til the morning--the price for an emergency call out was astronomical. i could have changed my mind at 3 in the morning and my vet would have come in. but waiting til the morning allowed for a full staff to be there and no over night stay. i stayed up with guinness and kept him calm. then he would sleep, wake up, sleep, wake up... and then the morning came and he was in by 7:30.... porquepine quills are VERY common here. His were nothing. do a google search for INCA the BULL TERRIER and PORCUPINE and be prepared to FREAK OUT!!!

  8. Wooos Guinness! That was life or death! Poor baby! I am horrified you got those things stuck in woo little face. I do not think I would be so patient, I would be screaming for help.... bummer man.....I think I will stay away from whatever porcupines are, I am glad we do not have them near me...

  9. oh gosh! Im sure glad we don't have those mean prickly things here in Sandy Eggo...unless you count sumthin called cactus. Those can be prickly too.

Poor boy, you sure look miserable. I can't believe the vet told you to wait until morning, the least he could have done was prescribe some pain killers to get you thru the night if he was too lazy to see you! Grrrr..that makes mom really mad.

    hope you feel better soon

  18. Dear sweet puppy I was reading your question to Ali and decided to check your blog. Oh my goodness me I am so sorry what a horrible accident. I CANNOT believe your vet did not consider that an emergency. How would your vet like to have a mouthful of porcipine quils? I'm aghast with horror.
Bless your mommy's heart for trying her best to get them out. I cannot imagine the pain and discomfort. We hope and pray you are feeling better.Madi and Mom

  22. Guinness, you're a true Irish Porcupine Hound! Back in the old days, only the Nobility could own such creatures. That was an awesome demonstration of innate quill-seeking instincts--plainly the result of centuries of selective breeding! In our eyes, you're a champ!

    Hope everything comes out okay,

  32. I am glad that you and your vet discussed what to do and that everything worked out OK. We suburban doggies don't know anything about wild animal stuff and what should be done and it just looked so awful, but you are OK now, right?

Please don't do that again, OK?

I'm so sorry this happened. it' looks NASTY.
Now the question is: will this make Guinness averse to porcupines or want to "get even" with porcupines? oooo... i sure hope it's the first!
    hope you get better soon!

  52. Ouch is an understatement you poor thing. Our Irish Setter got porcupined when I was a child and it was awful. We were up north, no vets around and my dad and I had to remove them. To this day I shudder and can feel the pain from here. Not fair, the Leonberger that was quilled was able to see an emergency vet same night. Hmmmm where's a good doctor when you need one.
