I can't close my mouth. I hurt so bad. I can't swallow or drink and I keep gaging and throwing up. I kept thrashing and yelping and turning in crazy circles like a mad dog. HELP HELP!
My mom grabbed me by the collar and we went home. I would not stay still. I was so confused and foaming and pawing and freaking out. My Dad was on a conference in Halifax so my mom called the vet. But it was late at night. The vet said it was not life and death so if we could wait until the morning we could get me in first thing, in the mean time we should try and remove as many as we could by ourselves.
But they were all stuck in my teeth and gums. Christa came down to hold me still and my mom took the pliers and pulled. The quills are barbed so they rip and tear on the way out. I went nuts and Christa took off screaming back to the attic and said she couldn't stand to do it. It was a long night and no one slept. My mom kept saying 5 more hours Guinness, 4 more, 3 more...it was terrible terrible terrible.

Holy crap! Late at night? Not life or death? What a lazy vet. That must have been the longest night of everybody's life for sure. It looks so painful. You poor guy. Now you are in jail? Without your girlfriend to comfort you?
ReplyDeleteGet better fast.
Slobbers,
Mango
OUCH!! What a long night that must have been. We hope everyone is rested and healing.

Oh No!!!!! I think I would have gotten another vet. Imagine if HE/SHE had to wait if that happened to them?!!
ReplyDeleteGlad your on the mend and that your humans cared for you.
Oh No Guinness, I'm so terribly sorry. I agree with the other's, the vet should have gotten you in so that the barbs could be pulled out when you had pain medicine in you.
ReplyDeleteI honestly hurts my mom person to see you like that, so we'll pray for your speedy recovery.
((hugs))
Oskar & his mom person
Oh OWWWWW. It hurts me to look at you. I think that vet has no compassion and is in the wrong line of business. Are there any others nearby so you can switch or are you stuck with that one?
ReplyDeleteGrrrrs from Gizzy
Rohan Here,
ReplyDeleteDude!!!!! :( I feel your pain.
Listen to your mom and take it easy.
we have a fantastic vet, i wouldn't trade him for the world. he left the decision up to me. it was my choice to wait til the morning--the price for an emergency call out was astronomical. i could have changed my mind at 3 in the morning and my vet would have come in. but waiting til the morning allowed for a full staff to be there and no over night stay. i stayed up with guinness and kept him calm. then he would sleep, wake up, sleep, wake up... and then the morning came and he was in by 7:30.... porquepine quills are VERY common here. His were nothing. do a google search for INCA the BULL TERRIER and PORCUPINE and be prepared to FREAK OUT!!!
ReplyDeleteWooos Guinness! That was life or death! Poor baby! I am horrified you got those things stuck in woo little face. I do not think I would be so patient, I would be screaming for help.... bummer man.....I think I will stay away from whatever porcupines are, I am glad we do not have them near me...
ReplyDelete.-Kira The BeaWootiful
oh gosh! Im sure glad we don't have those mean prickly things here in Sandy Eggo...unless you count sumthin called cactus. Those can be prickly too.
ReplyDeletePoor boy, you sure look miserable. I can't believe the vet told you to wait until morning, the least he could have done was prescribe some pain killers to get you thru the night if he was too lazy to see you! Grrrr..that makes mom really mad.
hope you feel better soon
wags, wiggles & healing slobbers
Murphydog
he couldn't swallow any pain killers. lol. Boy you guys are pretty unsympathetic for the vets--hahaa. again, it was my choice to wait it out til the morning, quills are very common here

ReplyDeleteDear sweet puppy I was reading your question to Ali and decided to check your blog. Oh my goodness me I am so sorry what a horrible accident. I CANNOT believe your vet did not consider that an emergency. How would your vet like to have a mouthful of porcipine quils? I'm aghast with horror.
ReplyDeleteBless your mommy's heart for trying her best to get them out. I cannot imagine the pain and discomfort. We hope and pray you are feeling better.Madi and Mom
Oh you poor baby! IT really hurts to look at those pictures. I can't even imagine how bad it hurts you! And your Mom! Has this ever happened to you before? Oh, of course not or you would have learned to give those bad animals a wide berth!
ReplyDeleteKisses and get well soon wishes,
Emma Rose
Oh NO! Poor poor baby! That must have been the longest night! We're with Mango, lazy a** vet!

Guinness, that looked horrendous! The pain and discomfort you must have been in! We're wishing you a speedy recover and hope you're getting some rest now.
ReplyDeletetake care of yourself
Clive and family
Guinness, you're a true Irish Porcupine Hound! Back in the old days, only the Nobility could own such creatures. That was an awesome demonstration of innate quill-seeking instincts--plainly the result of centuries of selective breeding! In our eyes, you're a champ!
ReplyDeleteHope everything comes out okay,
Buster, Sephie & Bailey
Guinness!
ReplyDeleteI can see you were waiting there for enough time!
I hope you are doing well now!
It looks really painful!
Take care
Kisses and hugs
Lorenza
OMG! Guinness! We found you through Mango's blog, and I wasn't expecting this! It looks so painful! Like, I think I may have nightmares! You poor doggy! I hope you're healing well... and I hope you never are tempted to bite a porcupine again! I never knew their quills are barbed! Oh... painful!
ReplyDeleteOMG! What kind of vet let's you suffer all night with porcupine quills in your mouth??? You poor thing, and your momma too for having to watch you suffer.
ReplyDeleteWe'd bite that vet in the shin, well we'd gum 'em. ...
xoxo
You poor guy. That looks awful. I never met one of those animals. You were very brave to take a bite out of him. But porcupines don't look too tasty. Hope you are all better soon.
ReplyDeleteDeefor

ReplyDeleteNow go to sleep and dream peaceful not having a porcupine in yer mouth dreams.
Bobo and Meja
I am glad that you and your vet discussed what to do and that everything worked out OK. We suburban doggies don't know anything about wild animal stuff and what should be done and it just looked so awful, but you are OK now, right?
ReplyDeletePlease don't do that again, OK?

Mango

Hey Guinness,
ReplyDeleteMango sent me here to wish you well. Now that I have read what happened I think you should post the name and address of your vet so I can get some doggies together to rip him/her a few new ones.
That is the most painful lookin thing I've ever seen.
Hoover BPD (Battery Powered Dog)
Yowza...you poor thing! That looks incredibly uncomfortable. I hope you are feeling much better very soon. This is my first visit here and I thought maybe you still had your vampire Halloween costume on! Get some rest, and I'll send you a long distance puppy kiss!
ReplyDeleteSadie Lou
Oh poor sweet Guinness....I am SO sorry this happened to you. Are you better now? I just can't imagine the pain or how your Mom felt knowing you were in so much pain...terrible! I did see a dead porcupine on the road two days ago if that makes you feel better. ;) Thinking of you!
ReplyDeleteKisses,
Nala
Holy Dog Crap! That looks NASTY! i woulda demanded that vet come over STAT! or gone to the ER, if there was one. no way would i be able to sleep with that kinda doggie!
ReplyDeleteI'm so sorry this happened. it' looks NASTY.
Now the question is: will this make Guinness averse to porcupines or want to "get even" with porcupines? oooo... i sure hope it's the first!
hope you get better soon!

Hi Guiness,

Hope you feel better soon.. (((Hugs))
Oh Guinness!

Puppy kisses (careful, soft ones)

I am heartbroken for you - I can't imagine how much that hurts, or how agonizing the walk home must of been for your Momma so worried about you. We hope so much you are on the mend, you poor sweet thing!
ReplyDeleteI know about those awful porkies. Pricks indeed.
ReplyDeletehope you are better soon.
Oh poor Guinness! Mango told us about your horrible incident and I am so sorry that the vet was not willing to see you right away. It must have been so hard for you and your mom. I hope you are feeling much better now!
ReplyDeletewally t.
Ouch is an understatement you poor thing. Our Irish Setter got porcupined when I was a child and it was awful. We were up north, no vets around and my dad and I had to remove them. To this day I shudder and can feel the pain from here. Not fair, the Leonberger that was quilled was able to see an emergency vet same night. Hmmmm where's a good doctor when you need one.
