Farm Fact or Farm Fiction?

Oh hi, it's just Guinness here. My dad has an old farm expression that says the snow won't come til the swamps are all full.

So he means that the snow won't stick around until all the little ponds, and all the little streams and brooks are full, and the ground is saturated with water.

GACK! LOOK! Do you recognize this place? It is one of our cow pastures. See the pole behind me?

See where the river is SUPPOSE to be? See the pole?

And all our pasture has turned into a Lake. Good thing the cows are in the barn and not out to pasture. One year this happened and all the cows got stuck on one little tuft sticking out! haha!

So I don't know what you may think, but I'M betting on snow pretty soon!

  4. The swamps and lakes are pretty full here too. Especially if we get the rain they are calling for this week. Guess that means it's on its way!

My dog will be happy. :-)

  5. Hey Guinness!

Its fun to have those old maxims to think about and judge the progress of the winter. Good luck and happy winter, whatever you get!

  14. That is indeed a lot of water! Hope your house is on a really high hill. Or a mountain. Did you have to swim out and help your dad lead those stranded cows to safety? That would be quite a job, persuading them it was "safe" to leave the high ground and go for a swim. Mama says cows don't much like to swim.

Mama's family hails from OK, so we hadn't heard the old tale about saturated ground and snow, being as the ground in OK is almost never saturated, and never for very long. But it still snows some, though not as much or as often as it does in New England.
